Another Angel in the Outfield…

IN MEMORY OF HERBERT WING 1961-2009

It is with a heavy heart that I share word of the passing of Herb Wing who died last night in the hospital after suffering a massive heart attack last Saturday. Herb was a great husband, father, coach, friend and neighbor to those who were fortunate to know him including myself. He was only 47 years old.

Herb’s house is just down the street from mine and our kids have played together both in our yards and on the ball fields many times over the years. The bus stop is at the corner of my yard, and every day Herb could be counted on to walk his boys the short 1/2 block to wait for the bus, just to spend time with them. I always enjoyed chatting with him and was happy to loan him my ladder to fight the ice-dams that caused roof leaks this past winter.

Herb was the Major League Coordinator for Littleton Youth Baseball and my son Matt had high hopes to play on his team this upcoming season because of his competitive nature and excellent coaching ability. Herb could always be counted on for a ready smile, especially when I told him that he was separated at birth from Carleton Fiske (really uncanny resemblance). He would always make a point of saying “Hi” with a wave if he passed me while I was directing traffic. He is survived by his wife Rose, his boys Justin (9) and Michael (12), and their dog Lakota. Our lives are so much emptier because of this terrible loss, but my prayer is that God drafted Herb to help a team in heaven…

  1. I also have to say Herb was a great man. I work at Providence College and we hired Herb to be the DJ at our Men’s Basketball Game. He was always a joy to work with. No matter what was going on he always had a smile on his face and could turn anyone’s frown upside down. He was so proud of his children and would always talk of their accomplishments on the field or court. We will miss Herb a lot for everything he brought to the Providence College community which was more than just entertaining the thousands of people who attended games at the Dunkin Donuts Center.

Can you please keep this post up to date if you hear of the arrangements for the burial? Thank you.

  2. What do learn from this?
Everyday is important, non just for business but for pleasure(family, friends and fun).Find some time to give a little back to your fellow humans.Herb was a very good man in every sense of the word BUT in addition to that he gave back(good nieghbor and friend, coach,DJ for cheap or no $$$$….
We could all learn a little from the way Herb Wing carried himself in word and more importantly in action.

  4. Thank you for the encouraging words about Herb. We were best of friends in high school 30 years ago. Only recently were we able to reconnect via the internet. I mourn that I will not have the opportunity to renew that friendship in person in this life. I am glad to hear of the ways that Herb grew to embrace life and make a positive contribution to those around him. You words have brought comfort to an old friend.

  5. Thank you all so very much for all the kind words and support in this very difficult time…. Herb will be missed a great deal

  6. Herb will certainly be missed. I have know Herb since 1996 when we worked together at a Food Broker and we both moved on to a manufacturer since. Herb and I also had a lot in common in that we had a DJ business on the side. I often sent Herb some gigs that I could not do and he was always very professional got rave reviews. I was shocked and extremely saddened to hear this news as he will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers will stay with his wife and children.
